Here Baby Cow :)

So here at the big ol'school of learning, they have this cool research facitily a few miles off campus. They offered some of the Animal Science students an oppritunity to feed baby calves. Granted, this is not something that is new to me. I fed baby goats from a bottle and honestly this wasn't much different. But the interesting part is they are researching a specific growth hormone found in pig and sheep food, and seeing if it has the same effect on cows. From what they have informed me, it does. That's the exciting part. They are going to offer this information to the animal nutrition program, where they will create the hormone in cow food, and after many tests and trials begin to sell it to certain research individuals. It was pretty great to realize that I was going to be a part of that one day. Maybe it will even be my idea :)
Y'all have a great weekend :)

  1. Did they explain the Hormone and what benefit it actually does for the cows?

  2. Apparently it speeds up their growth habit, which would benefit stocker cows for feed lots and show cattle. The hormone started with an A but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called. I ask tomorrow.

  3. I have a few questions, does the growth hormone effect the meat any? Does it effect the bone structure of the cow? Does it do anything to the reproductive organs to where it can maybe breed earlier? IF you are putting a growth hormone into an animal what does it do to the people eating that meat? I am sure that I will have more questions on this subject, Love you MOM

  4. It is the same one put in pigs and sheep, so it really has no lasting effects on the meat. It is more of "speeding up" process that allows market cows to grow faster. From the data, there are no signs that it is negatively effecting their bone structure. And no, they will still have the same estrous cycle that causes them to breed at an age instead of a body weight. Given on the breed of cow. :) Love you too.
